XD Lab

KAIST Media Art — KAIST XD Lab's 2026 Special Exhibition Living Geometry 2026

KAIST's media-art research and practice can be seen in one room this spring and summer at YDP Artsquare in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul — Living Geometry 2026, curated and developed by KAIST Experience Design Lab (XD Lab) and free through June 28.

KAIST Industrial Design and XD Lab

KAIST Industrial Design (ID KAIST), founded in 1986 as the first design department at any Korean engineering college, has grown from product design into HCI, interaction, UX, media art, and service & systems design. It placed 28th worldwide (1st in Korea) in the 2025 QS Arts & Design rankings and 1st worldwide in the 2025 iF Design Ranking among education institutions.

The Experience Design Lab (XD Lab) is a research and practice group within that department, led by Professor Yiyun Kang. Its work spans media art, interactive art, web art, art-and-technology, and HCI art; it publishes in Leonardo Journal (MIT Press), ACM SIGGRAPH, and ACM DIS, and has received Red Dot and iF Design Awards.

Director Yiyun Kang is a media artist with collaborations including Google, NASA, Max Mara, and BTS, solo exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum and COP28, and a TED 2026 main-stage talk.

How KAIST media art appears in this exhibition

Living Geometry 2026 shows the two sides of KAIST media art — artistic practice and academic research — meeting inside individual works.

Yiyun Kang's Vanishing 2.0 (2025) and Technosphere (2026), with Minhyeok Seo's Post-Vanishing (2026): single-channel video media art on the Anthropocene, the technosphere, and the post-human city.

Intae Hwang's Goldilocks (2025) and Vessel (2026): sensor-driven interactive installations combining biofeedback and real-time urban data — engineering precision moved directly into a medium of art.

Jeanyoon Choi's ∫ (Banpo-Xism) (2026): a multi-device web work of roughly 120,000 lines, developed by the artist alone using Claude Code — a Korean case of AI engineering inside critical media art.

Minhyeok Seo's City'scape + Tied (2026): a situational design fusing a physical door with video and interaction.

About the exhibition

Living Geometry 2026 is a media-art special exhibition curated and developed by the KAIST Experience Design Lab (XD Lab) within KAIST's Department of Industrial Design. It re-threads Yeongdeungpo's visible urban landscape, its invisible data, and the emotional strata behind them in a geometric language — recasting the city, beyond a stilled aggregate of concrete, as an organism in continual pulse. Seven works span single-channel video, interactive installation, and multi-device web art.
