Research areas

  1. Ω · Jeanyoon Choi (2025)

    Jeanyoon Choi

    Medium
    Multi-Device Web Artwork (4 Displays, 1 Mobile)
    Venue
    Design Korea 2025

Ω is an interactive, multi-device web artwork that critiques the vectorisation of human identity, specifically the MBTI craze in Korea. Initially, the audience engages with a GPT-based MBTI test via mobile, constructing a cylindrical 3D vector space on surrounding screens. However, the experience shifts as phones are accidentally shaken. Realising that these tremors trigger glitches, users actively shake their devices until the ordered system tilts and collapses. This deconstruction captures shaken, low-fidelity images of the audience, overwriting the polished AI simulacrum. Ω thus acts as a playful disruption, reclaiming undefinable human subjectivity from the panopticon of algorithmic classification.

  2. MUESUM · Minhyeok Seo, Junyeong Im (2025)

    Minhyeok Seo, Junyeong Im

    Medium
    Led wall, 3 '03 '' video, audio
    Venue

    Intae Hwang

    Medium
Real-time Participatory Data Artwork (Large LED Display, Sound)
    Venue
    KF XR Gallery

Goldilocks is a real-time participatory data artwork that explores the 'just right' equilibrium of our climate. By translating personal weather preferences into unique visual data units, the work maps a 'collective climate comfort zone'. Through a similarity-based spatial arrangement, it juxtaposes human desire with planetary reality, revealing the fragility of our ideal states while celebrating the resilience of collective hope.

  4. SoTA · Jeanyoon Choi, Euan Kang, SeJoon Park, Minhyeok Seo, Prof. Yiyun Kang (2024)

Jeanyoon Choi, Euan Kang, SeJoon Park, Minhyeok Seo, Prof. Yiyun Kang

    Multi-Device Web Artwork (4 Displays, 2 Projectors, 1 Mobile, 4 Channel Audio)
    Venue
    KAIST Art Museum

SoTA is an interactive XAI Multi-Device Web Artwork. Audience’s phone initially navigates a 3d visualisation of 118 neural networks; when they leave, all screens erupt into chaotic monochrome patterns, exposing AI’s drift from human comprehension toward “AI for AI’s sake”.

  5. Biosphere: JENGA · Minhyeok Seo, Junyeong Im (2024)

Projects — XD Lab Media Art Archive

XD Lab (Experience Design Lab) is the art-and-technology research group at the Department of Industrial Design, KAIST, led by Professor Yiyun Kang. We produce and research media art, interactive art, web art, projection mapping, and immersive installation. Below is the project archive — single-channel video, large-scale projection, web-based interactive works, and sensor-driven installation across multiple years and media.

Research areas

XD Lab's works and research traverse the more specific practices of contemporary media art — translating geometry, differential geometry, and theoretical physics into visual and interactive media; sensor-driven interactive art (pulse-sensor biofeedback); generative web art built on AI and generative systems; multi-device web artworks; real-time data visualization and code-based media art; single-channel video addressing Anthropocene and technosphere discourse; and Korean web art and interactive art practices connecting post-human cityscape and image research.

These works are produced as interdisciplinary art-and-technology research at the Department of Industrial Design (ID KAIST) and the Experience Design Lab (XD Lab), spanning experience design research, HCI art, and Korean media-art PhD / graduate study — with artworks and peer-reviewed publications arising side by side.
