Year: 2023 Artwork creators: Prof. Yiyun Kang Medium: Site-specific Projection mapping 7 '00" projection, audio system, LED lightings Venue: ART ON THE MART, Chicago, Il, USA Research concepts: AI art (AI 아트), immersive projection (몰입형 프로젝션), environmental media art (환경 미디어아트) Research question: How can immersive projection make the environmental crisis and the scale of AI perceptible together? Method: immersive projection, environmental media art, AI imagery Contribution: Connects environmental media art with an immersive account of technological scale and ecological crisis. Summary: ART on THE MART celebrates its 5th anniversary with a new commission by Dr. Yiyun Kang, esteemed artist in the field of projection mapping and immersive art. The work, titled Only in the Dark, responds to humanity’s environmental crisis and the unfathomable power and intelligence of AI technologies. Description: We are entering a new dark age. All the environmental crises prove that nature would no longer tolerate humanity's arrogant exploitation. Evolving AI technologies are unfathomable. Machines might win human intelligence in the near future. Throughout our evolution, we have paradoxically alienated ourselves from our home planet Earth, and we are alienated from the technologies we have created. How can we find a way to get out of this darkness? We see the light only in the dark. The light shines even brighter in the deep darkness. We seem to find a way out in the worst of times. My work Only in the Dark tries to share a message that we can collectively think about for our inclusive future. In the heart of downtown Chicago, my project, "Only in the Dark," emerges as a beacon of reflection on our collective journey through the current challenges humanity faces. Set against the backdrop of the iconic Mart building in Chicago, the project unfolds in three captivating scenes. The first witnesses the structure's transformation, symbolizing the dawn of a new era emerging from darkness. The second envisions a harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity through a biophilic building, employing AI to explore the evolved relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Finally, the third scene portrays a mesmerizing human dance in water, illuminating hope amid the prevailing darkness. This multidimensional narrative, blending digital animation, real footage, AI-generated imagery, and a carefully crafted soundscape, aims to engage the public in profound contemplation, resonating with the Mart's history of environmental stewardship. Artwork video: https://vimeo.com/883684055 Artwork image 1 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/1-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 2 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/2-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 3 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/3-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 4 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/4-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 5 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/5-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 6 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/6-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Artwork image 7 of 7: https://www.xdlab.net/projects-optimized/1/7-1920.webp | Only in the Dark by Prof. Yiyun Kang (2023) Related publications: none registered Official external source: https://www.yiyunkang.com/onlyinthedark Markdown: https://www.xdlab.net/projects/only-in-the-dark/markdown ## ≠ (Nonequality) Canonical URL: https://www.xdlab.net/projects/nonequality Korean title/alias: 비동등 Artwork names: ≠ (Nonequality); ≠; 비동등; Nonequality Korean summary: 멀티디바이스·제너러티브 웹아트와 수학적·비판적 데이터 시각화를 연결하는 작품이다. AI 아트로 분류하지 않는다. Year: 2023 Artwork creators: Jeanyoon Choi Medium: Multi-Device Web Artwork (4 Channels, 1 Mobile) Venue: Ars Electronica, Austria | Istanbul Digital Arts Festival, Türkiye Research concepts: multi-device web artwork (멀티디바이스 웹아트), Korean web art research (한국 웹아트 연구), generative web art (제너러티브 웹아트), mathematical visualization (수학적 시각화), critical data visualization (비판적 데이터 시각화) Research question: How can a multi-device web artwork expose the illogical outcomes that emerge from apparently logical systems? Method: multi-device web artwork, generative web art, mathematical visualisation Contribution: Offers a critical visualisation of datafication and algorithmic rationality; it is not classified as AI art. Summary: Nonequality is an interactive Multi-Device Web Artwork arguing that the world cannot be comprehended solely with equations. Description: ≠ (Nonequality) denotes anything else other than = (Equality). = implies a singular answer, while ≠ encompasses limitless possibilities. However, we often prefer = over ≠, attempting false datificiation (Intangible_Ambiguity=Numerical_Value), or uncritical acceptance of algorithmic outcomes (Generative_AI=Truth). Like the overreliance on Recommendation Systems, some accept LLM-generated texts to be assuredly true. The artwork “≠” explores the theme of ‘Illogicality within seemingly logical systems’, resonating with the notion that the rational components can amalgamate to produce irrational outcomes, akin to Dostoevsky’s criticism of the Crystal Palace. It presents how algorithmic outcomes - often considered logical - might present an illogical impression when aggregated. Employing different AI-generated outcomes ranging from GPT, Stable Diffusion, and TTS, “≠” presents the aggregated chaos where individual sections adhere to logic and algorithms, yet the overall experience emerges as illogical, deconstructed, and decentralised. Implemented in 4 Channels, “≠” invites audiences to scan the QR with their mobile and interact with this web-based artwork in real-time. Upon landing the mobile website, they first encounter an encyclopaedic interface where they can click on blue hyperlink keywords, transitioning from one keyword to another. Each keyword click dynamically influences all four channels via WebSocket, affecting the Rhizomatic Database, overlaid YouTube videos, and TTS-empowered dialogues where one screen generates LLM-based scripts in real-time, and the other responds ‘Ja’ continuously to the LLM. This ‘Ja’, reminiscent of a Nietzscheistic Camel, shifts towards ‘Nein’ and aggregated ‘Nein’ as audiences’ interaction accelerates, symbolically representing the evolution towards Nietzschestic Lion and Baby. The latest stage presents immersive chaos across all four channels, presenting joyful illogicality (≠) generated from seemingly logical systems (=). Method: NASA GRACE data, NASA–CNES SWOT data, immersive web storytelling, art–science Contribution: Translates freshwater data into an interactive public experience about water availability, climate impact, and collective care. Summary: Passage of Water is an immersive artistic experience that interprets historical data from NASA’s GRACE satellites and new high-resolution data from NASA’s SWOT mission to illustrate how climate change is impacting Earth’s water cycle. Description: Passage of Water is Yiyun Kang's interactive artwork highlighting freshwater's diminishing availability and its relation with climate change. Kang spent a year from November 2022 to December 2023 as an artist in residence in the Google Arts & Culture Lab’s Heartbeat of the Earth programme, which tasks artists with addressing the climate crisis. Passage of Water is the outcome of Kang's residency programme. Made in partnership with Google Arts & Culture and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Passage of Water uses a vast amount of datasets from two of NASA’s satellites; GRACE and SWOT. Notably, the SWOT satellite was launched in Dec 2022, and its first dataset was exclusively used for the first time in Passage of Water before being publicly released. With cohesive storytelling alongside various techniques in data visualization, software engineering, interaction design and audio-visual production, Passage of Water presented an immersive and accessible platform for audiences to deeply engage with the global freshwater crisis, showcased across online and offline venues including the COP28 conference. Passage of Water demonstrates a true convergence of Art and Science, illustrating how artwork incorporating scientific findings and engineering applications can come together to orchestrate an artistic experience that facilitates a public conversation on critical issues facing humanity. Thus, experiencing Passage of Water will provide the seamless integration of science and technology with art, offering a unique example of interdisciplinary collaboration. Passage of Water web artwork was launched on the Google Arts & Culture platform on 30 November 2023. Kang then adapted the online experiment into an in-person exhibition at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) Dubai, UAE from 30 November to 12 December 2023. Summary: After a year-long collaboration with the KAIST Center for Anthropocene Studies, XD Lab presented two distinct projection mapping artworks: JENGA (Biosphere) and UNITE D'HABITATION (Technosphere), which poetically and immersively depict various aspects of the Anthropocene. Description: UNITE D'HABITATION | Euan Kang, Intae Hwang The 20th century was an era of standardization and mass production. Industrialization and technological advancements of this period maximized production efficiency and shaped a mass consumer society. This significantly increased human influence, leading to discussions on a new term, the Anthropocene. Le Corbusier's Unité d’habitation is a representative building symbolizing this era's trends. Unlike previous buildings, it efficiently implemented large spaces through standardized modules. This building signifies the acceleration humanity has continuously pursued and the achievements built upon it. So far, the focus has been on the significant achievements humanity has made in a short time. Therefore, under the same name, Unité d’habitation, we aim to shed light on deeper, previously hidden aspects. part 1 To achieve the standardization and mass production humanity has pursued, other entities have been consumed in arbitrary and random forms. This contrast is expressed as a single connected image, like an architectural elevation. part 2 Corresponding to the elevation in Part 1, the floor plans of each floor are shown sequentially from the top floor to the bottom floor. Summary: Biosphere: JENGA is an architectural projection artwork examining biosphere, extinction, and Anthropocene projection through ecological media art. Description: JENGA | Minhyeok Seo, Junyeong Im Humanity has exploited and destroyed the Earth’s resources and her life. This process was done slowly and secretly, thus most of modern people can only recognize, but are unable to feel this tragedy. The project mapped on KAIST main building runs with three parts. First part, giant hands alter the main building, showing how humanity has changed the Earth fitting to our needs and greed. After several demonstrations of using the Earth’s resources, a collapsed world is all that remains. Second part delivers a message about human centered choice of species and extinction with the scene of stacking animals. Giant hands try to make up for their fault by stacking animals and restore the world. However, this could not be fulfilled as pigs and chickens flood in and fill up the world. Last part, we imagine the end of the overpopulated Earth. Space filled with animals is finally distorted, and after chaos, we encounter the ‘Earth reset’. Method: multi-device web artwork, neural-network visualisation, embodied interaction, public exhibition Contribution: Frames an experiential and critical approach to public AI engagement and AI literacy. Summary: SoTA is an interactive XAI Multi-Device Web Artwork. Audience’s phone initially navigates a 3d visualisation of 118 neural networks; when they leave, all screens erupt into chaotic monochrome patterns, exposing AI’s drift from human comprehension toward “AI for AI’s sake”. Description: State-of-the-Art (SoTA) refers to cutting-edge AI models, analogous to achieving an artistic pinnacle. Early SoTA architectures (CNN/RNN) were designed to mimic human cognition, echoing the representational approach. Yet, as Rich Sutton’s “Bitter Lesson” argues, ever-growing GPU power now eclipses human-designed intricacies, nudging SoTA from carefully crafted forms toward vast, computation-driven abstractions. This shift parallels how art moved from representation into Modernism’s more abstract modes, especially after photography’s rise. A century ago, Benjamin spotted the profound influence of mechanical reproduction on aesthetics. Decades later, abstract expressionism emerged at the extreme of modernism, epitomised by Pollock’s action paintings and Greenberg’s emphasis on flatness. Likewise, today’s AI reproduction propels neural networks beyond human comprehension—a realm of “AI for AI’s sake”—hintable from Eric Schmidt’s warning. SoTA is an XAI(Explainable AI)-driven interactive multi-device web artwork that makes our evolving metaphor tangible. Two projectors, four PCs, and audiences’ mobiles present 118 neural architectures in a 3D, interactive, and representational form—initially mirroring SoTA’s earlier pre-modernist era (the Frontend). But once audiences stop interacting and leave the site, unprecedentedly, the screens flip to chaotic monochrome visuals that abstractly depict LLM token cross-similarities (the Backend). Like Pollock’s expressive drips, the swirling lines of connectionism immerse audiences in a vortex of high-dimensional complexity no longer intelligible to us. Mirroring Modernism’s shift, SoTA reveals how AI can reshape society, identity, and creativity. It questions whether massive models will foster inclusive, human-centred progress or slip into self-referential abstraction—a Black Box. By uncovering AI’s hidden layers, SoTA urges us to reflect on the implications of State-of-the-Artificial Intelligence and responsibly guide these systems. Method: real-time participatory data art, climate data visualisation, interaction design Contribution: Makes collective climate preference visible while contrasting human desire with planetary conditions. Summary: Goldilocks is a real-time participatory data artwork that explores the 'just right' equilibrium of our climate. By translating personal weather preferences into unique visual data units, the work maps a 'collective climate comfort zone'. Through a similarity-based spatial arrangement, it juxtaposes human desire with planetary reality, revealing the fragility of our ideal states while celebrating the resilience of collective hope. Description: In the context of the Anthropocene, climate data is often presented as cold, overwhelming, and distant. Goldilocks reclaims this narrative through the lens of Data Humanism, shifting the focus from abstract planetary metrics to the intimate scale of human sentiment. The title references the 'Goldilocks Zone', which is the precarious astronomical boundary where conditions are 'just right' for life, as a metaphor for the delicate balance required to sustain our contemporary world. The installation invites viewers to participate in an act of data translation. Through an interactive interface, participants articulate their favorite weather, an idealized environmental state, which is instantly manifested as a unique visual entity within a real-time environment. Utilizing custom systems, these individual units are not merely stored but are dynamically organized based on their systemic similarity. As more voices join, the work evolves into a visual orrery of human desire, forming a 'collective climate comfort zone.' However, this sanctuary of personal preference exists in a state of tension. The work periodically juxtaposes this curated comfort zone with raw, real-time climate data, creating a poignant paradox: the 'just right' state desired by many is revealed to be increasingly vulnerable in the face of current environmental shifts. By manifesting the transscalar link between individual sensory memory and global climate reality, Goldilocks moves beyond a simple visualization of crisis. It offers a meditative space where the gathering of small, diverse voices points toward the possibility of collective hope and systemic resilience. Year: 2025 Artwork creators: Jeanyoon Choi Medium: Multi-Device Web Artwork (4 Displays, 1 Mobile) Venue: Design Korea 2025 Research concepts: multi-device web artwork (멀티디바이스 웹아트), Korean web art research (한국 웹아트 연구), critical AI art (비판적 AI 아트), GPT interaction (GPT 인터랙션), algorithmic identity (알고리즘 정체성) Research question: How can GPT interaction challenge algorithmic classification of human identity? Method: multi-device web artwork, GPT interaction, mobile interaction Contribution: Critiques algorithmic identity by turning a GPT-based classification system into a participatory breakdown. Summary: Ω is an interactive, multi-device web artwork that critiques the vectorisation of human identity, specifically the MBTI craze in Korea. Initially, the audience engages with a GPT-based MBTI test via mobile, constructing a cylindrical 3D vector space on surrounding screens. However, the experience shifts as phones are accidentally shaken. Realising that these tremors trigger glitches, users actively shake their devices until the ordered system tilts and collapses. This deconstruction captures shaken, low-fidelity images of the audience, overwriting the polished AI simulacrum. Ω thus acts as a playful disruption, reclaiming undefinable human subjectivity from the panopticon of algorithmic classification. Description: Ω (Omega) critically reflects the pervasive MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) hype in Korea, where human identities are reduced to four-dimensional data vectors. This binary logic facilitates the standardisation, commodification, and vectorisation of the human being. We mistakenly treat these categories as definitions rather than descriptions. These vectors often serve as social filters in Korean contexts like dating and hiring, causing individuals to internalise limited categories at the expense of complexity. This reduction of humanity to data facilitates our own mechanisation. Beyond machines mimicking humans, humans are increasingly becoming machine-like vectors, signalling a profound existential crisis. Ω is a multi-device web artwork where the audience interacts with a multi-channel installation. After scanning a QR code, the audience engages with a GPT-based questionnaire using their mobile phone. Based on previous responses, the artwork infinitely generates questions with binary choices, trapping the user in the MBTI’s binary system. These responses are evaluated in real-time to produce an MBTI type, displayed across multiple screens. The leftmost screen, for instance, represents the Extrovert/Introvert axis, displaying AI-generated videos symbolising that specific type. These videos form a rotating 3D cylindrical vector space, creating a Three.js-based visual structure evoking a surveillance gaze. The audience remains trapped in the middle of this accelerating, seemingly unescapable panopticon. An unexpected narrative shift arises not from explicit instruction, but from the implicit nature of human interaction. Even a slight, accidental tremor of the holding hand triggers glitches across all devices. Initially, these subtle changes may be unnoticed. However, as the accidental shaking accumulates, the ordered cylindrical vector space distorts further, becoming impossible to ignore. Realising their physical agency, the audience no longer focuses on the interface to actively shake their mobiles. The further they shake, the larger the distortion becomes. Generative videos detach from the cylinder and float freely in 3D space, resulting in a deconstructivist collapse. Simultaneously, the mobile glitch brutally reveals the underlying code, exposing HTML tags and JavaScript variables, stripped of their protective wrappers. With each shake, live photographs are captured via the mobile camera, resulting in naturally blurred, shaken images of the audience. These imperfect human faces overwrite the polished, high-fidelity AI imagery within the deconstructed vector space. This interaction symbolises the recovery of an undefinable, imperfect subjectivity against the organised system. The audience uses their mobile device as an expressive tool to conduct these chaotic visuals. They shake the device to direct the breakdown of the vector space, while dynamically adjusting the camera angle to manipulate textures within the scene. This multi-modal engagement demonstrates a systematic contrast: initially, the audience is a passive subject confined by panoptic screens; subsequently, they actively deconstruct the system. The title, Ω, references the symbol for resistance in electromagnetism. Just as electrical resistance enables a circuit to flow, this work posits that questioning, doubting, and shaking the socio-cultural trend of vectorisation is essential. Ω aims to critically rethink this process. Through multi-modal interactions and unexpected narrative shifts, the work establishes a space for playful, critical, and resistive discourse on the human-algorithm relationship. The work translates this myth into a multi-device web artwork in which audience mobile phones are synchronized with surrounding screens. Audiences first scroll through an SNS-like feed of fictional apartment complexes arranged by location and brand. Each scroll updates the surrounding screens as a step toward higher coordinates, while remaining confined to a flat apartment plane. Later, mobile interactions collectively deform this field into higher-dimensional geometric forms, shifting coordinates, prices, and textual hierarchies across the installation. Thus, makes social myth visible as a coordinate system audiences enter, perform, and destabilize. Description: The Republic of Korea is the “Republic of Apartments” (Valérie Gelézeau). With 53.9% of households living in apartments, apartments are no longer simply housing; they are objects of aspiration, speculation, and fetishised value. Complexes such as Banpo-Xi and Apgujeong-Hyundai, worth up to KRW 10 billion (USD 7 million), are symbols of status and aspiration. This post-consumerist obsession with prime districts (Banpo, Apgujeong) and apartment brands (Xi, Hyundai) recalls Baudrillard’s minimum marginal difference: tiny distinctions within a standardised concrete city, where what an apartment’s location-brand signifies matters more than the apartment itself. Banpo-Xism (반포자이즘), a term coined by the artists, names this contemporary Korean social thread: a blind, zero-sum competition toward the same idealised real-estate coordinate of location (L) and brand (B). Within this L-B plane, people compare, compete, and pursue higher coordinates. This recalls Abbott’s satirical novella , in which two-dimensional beings mistake their plane for reality, unable to imagine dimensions beyond it. From a higher-dimensional view, however, Flatland’s laws appear narrow, arbitrary, and almost absurd. experiments with a similar proposition: Banpo-Xi, the apparent ultimate coordinate of success, may be only a flattened projection of a larger higher-dimensional field. Through iterative mathematical, geometric, and interaction trials, the artists designed the following system: begins on a two-dimensional L-B plane containing 19 x 19 apartment complexes. Lower-value complexes occupy the bottom-left, while Banpo-Xi sits at the upper-right, with prices ranked according to each apartment’s L/B position. Audience members enter a custom mobile web app, beginning with an Instagram-like vertical feed: a synthetic real-estate social-media world of fictional apartment posts and status-anxious comments such as, “Honestly, people’s faces change when I say I live in Banpo-Xi.” As they doom-scroll, their (L, B) coordinate moves upward. The same movement is updated in real time on surrounding screens, where multiple audience members appear at once, blindly competing to reach the upper-right. Yet the moment they click an advertisement, “Enter a higher-dimensional world,” they slip out of the two-dimensional plane. Each link reveals a hidden variable beyond L/B, opening an adjustable dimension. As these dimensions are adjusted, the flat apartment plane begins to fold, spin, scatter, and come alive as a differentiable manifold. By touching, shaking, and shouting into their phones, audience members turn hidden constants into interactive parameters, adding dimensions and deforming the field of apartments. Drawing on differential geometry, gives mathematical form to a world beyond the flatness of the L-B plane. As the manifold is projected back onto the L-B coordinate, apartment prices fluctuate, revealing Banpo-Xism’s hierarchy as a lower-dimensional projection of a higher-dimensional value system. Through this structure, translates a contemporary social thread into an interactive experiment built from technical and mathematical strands. The artists engineered 94,285 lines of custom JavaScript over six months, iteratively testing, editing, and fine-tuning its visual, systemic, and interactive behaviours. This customised software invites audiences to experience, manipulate, and imagine a higher-dimensional world beyond the post-consumerist values of location and brand. was exhibited at exhbiition in YDP Art Square, and engaged with about 2,000 audiences interacting directly from their mobiles. It visualises 118 neural network architectures as artistic objects that can be experienced at an immersive scale, allowing audiences to select, explore, and navigate different models interactively. The installation is also characterised by an intentional narrative shift that moves from open-ended exploration to abstract visualisation. We exhibited SoTA in a public art museum and conducted an in-situ study with 33 participants to investigate how aesthetic experiences foster affective and critical reflection, complementing technical explanation in public AI engagement. Our findings reveal how aesthetic environments create emotional conditions that foster deeper inquiry, leading to enhanced understanding, productive ambivalence, and ultimately personal, philosophical, and societal reflection on AI. We conclude by discussing the opportunities of artistic exhibitions for public AI engagement and suggest three concrete design strategies grounded in our design and evaluation of SoTA. Departing from generative AI art, this project performs a structural Translation of invisible AI architecture. The installation functions as a Gesamtkunstwerk, synthesizing kinetic Neural Pods, projection, and spatial audio into an immersive system. Furthermore, Light Architecture transcends mere translation, aiming to physically construct a brain-inspired conceptual model that transcends the linear optimization of conventional AI. Therefore, this research comprehensively examines the design processes underlying Light Architecture. Theoretically grounded in Heidegger’s notion of Unconcealment (Aletheia), the work strips away seamless interfaces to physically manifest algorithmic flows. By converting abstract logic into visceral sensory experience, the project proposes a paradigm shift from Explainable AI (XAI) to Experiential AI. Ultimately, this paper argues that confronting the AI Hyperobject through embodied engagement is essential for reclaiming human agency. By “Making the Invisible Visible,” Light Architecture offers a poetic yet critical framework for navigating the inscrutable technological terrain of the algorithmic age.
